The Roman-Catholic Church of Divine Mercy with the largest glass cross in the world

The dominant elements of the church, which is the youngest sacral building in the town, are two 38 m high monolithic towers ended with single arm crosses. In the space between the towers, there is a green single arm cross from stacked glass and stainless steel. According to its authors the cross is thanks to its height of 5,6 m and span of 3,6 m the largest glass cross in the world placed in a church.

Below, there is a tabernacle made of golden onyx and brass. On the left wall there is a life-size picture of the Merciful Jesus. The green altar from stacked glass and stainless steel is also a dominant element of the church. Based on the architecture, technology and equipment, the church is one of the modern purpose-built buildings of sacral architecture in Slovakia.

Place of pilgrimage and exhibition of gifts from the Vatican

The church is a place of pilgrimage; in 2009 it was declared a diocesan Sanctuary of Divine Mercy. There are relics of three apostles of Divine Mercy - Faustina Kowalska, St. Vincent Pallotti and the blessed Pope John Paul II.

In the sanctuary and the adjacent monastic-pastoral centre there is an exhibition of gifts from the Vatican, received by Pope John Paul II on his apostolic trips, and part of them he donated to the Catholic Apostleship Association near the Roman Catholic Parish in Smižany - spiritual father Pallotti, who administer this church.
